Biology 7.2.3 Flashcards
Elements, Such as Carbon, are not ___ Resources.
Endless.
There is a ___ Amount of Each Element on the Planet.
Finite.
Elements Must be ___ in Order to Allow New Organisms to be Made & Grow.
Recycled.
What are all of the Parts in the ‘Carbon Cycle’? (8)
-Carbon Dioxide in the Atmosphere.
-Used in Photosynthesis, to Produce Carbohydrates & Other Biological Molecules. (eg Glucose)
-Plants are Eaten by Animals.
-Carbon is Released Into the Atmosphere During Respiration of Plants, Animals, & Decomposers.
-Carbon in Dead & Decaying Matter is Broken Down by Decomposers.
-Carbon Dioxide in Decaying Matter & Waste.
-Carbon Stored in Fossil Fuels (Coal & Oil).
-Carbon Released Back Into the Atmosphere when Fossil Fuels are Burned (Combustion).
What are the Steps of the ‘Water Cycle’? (6)
-Water Evaporates from the Oceans & Seas, Via Thermal Energy Provided by the Sun.
-As the Water Rises, it Condenses, Forming Clouds.
-As More & More Water Keeps Evaporating from the Oceans & the Seas, & then Condensing as it Rises, the Clouds become very Heavy. Then, Water is Released as Precipitation (Rain, Snow, Hail, Sleet).
-Precipitation Forms Rivers, which Feeds Water Back into the Oceans & Seas.
-Animals Take in Water for Respiration. Water is Released from Animals Via Faeces, Urine, & Exhalation.
-Plants Take in Water from the Roots for Respiration & Photosynthesis. Then, Water is Released from Plants Via Transpiration into the Atmosphere. (Plants Intake Water Via Osmosis in their Roots, then Use it for Respiration & Photosynthesis, then It Evaporates Out of the Stomata- Transpiration Stream.).
What is the Vital Role Played by Microorganisms in Cycling Material Through an Ecosystem?
They Return Carbon to the Atmosphere as Carbon Dioxide, & Mineral Ions to the Soil.
