Q

What are ‘Producers’?

A

Producers are the Primary Source of Energy in a Food Chain. Eg Plants, Such as Grass, that make their own Energy (Glucose) Via Photosynthesis.

Q

A Producer has the Following Characteristics: (5)

A

-They are at the Start of Every Food Chain. (The First Trophic Level).

-They Can Photosynthesise.

-They Make their Own Energy, Glucose, Via Photosynthesis.

-They Use this Glucose to Produce Other Biological Molecules, which then Make Up the Producer’s Biomass. (Some is also Used in Respiration).

-In Extreme Environments, the Producers are not Photoautotrophs, but Chemoautotrophs, who Produce Organic Molecules Without Using Energy from the Sun.

Q

What are ‘Quadrats’?

A

Quadrats are Square Grid Frames, that Can be Used to Measure the Abundance of Plants, or Slow-Moving Animals.

17
Q

Quadrats Can be Used to Measure Abundance of a Population, by Recording: (3)

A

-The Number of an Individual Species.

-Species Richness.

-Percentage Cover.

18
Q

What is a ‘Transect’?

A

A Transect is Used to Measure how the Abundance of a Species Changes as you Move Along a Changing Habitat.

19
Q

Explain how a ‘Transect’ Works: (3)

A

-A Line, Called a Transect, is Set Up on the Ground, eg out of String.

-A Quadrat is Used at Regular Intervals, eg Every 5 Metres Along the Transect.

-At Each Interval, the Quadrat Can be Used to Record the Number of an Individual Species, Species Richness, or Percentage Cover.

20
Q

Consumers that Kill & Eat Other Animals are ___, & those Eaten are ___.

A

Predators, Prey.

21
Q

The Amount of Predators & Prey in an Environment are very Closely…

A

Linked.
