Biology 7.1.1 Flashcards
What are the 4 Levels of Organisation Within an Ecosystem? (4)
-Individual Organism.
-Population.
-Community.
-Ecosystem.
What is an ‘Individual Organism’?
A Single Member of a Species.
What is a ‘Population’?
A Number of Individuals of the Same Species Living in the Same Area at the Same Time.
What is a ‘Community’?
Multiple Populations (of Different Species) Living, & Interacting, in the Same Area.
What is an ‘Ecosystem’?
The Interaction Between a Community (the Living, Biotic Part), & the Non-Living (Abiotic) Parts of the Environment.
What is ‘Competition’?
When a Group of Organisms Require the same Resource in Order to Survive, Competition for it will Occur.
What are the 2 Types of Competition? What are they? (2)
-Intraspecific Competition: Competition Between Members of the Same Species.
-Interspecific Competition: Competition Between Members of Different Species.
What is ‘Intraspecific Competition’?
Competition Between Members of the Same Species.
What is ‘Interspecific Competition’?
Competition Between Members of Different Species.
What is ‘Adaptation’?
When an Organism has Certain Features / Behaviours that give it an Advantage in Competition for Resources.
What are some Examples of Interactions Within an Ecosystem? (3)
-Predators Eating Prey.
-Herbivores Eating Plants.
-Plant Species being Pollinated by Bees.
What are Factors that Plants may Compete for? (4)
-Light.
-Space.
-Water.
-Mineral Ions.
What are Factors that Animals may Compete for? (3)
-Food.
-Mates.
-Territory.
What is ‘Interdependence’?
When all Species (Biotic & Abiotic) Rely upon each other to Survive.
What is a ‘Stable Community’?
One where all Species & Environmental Factors are in Balance so that Population Sizes Remain fairly Constant.
