Biology 2b Flashcards
At what temperature do enzymes in the human body work best at?
37 degrees
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up
What does amylase do?
Converts starch into sugars
What does protease do?
Turns proteins into amino acids
What does lipase do?
Turns lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose which goes on in every cell
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the energy released by aerobic respiration used for?
Build larger molecules from smaller ones, allow muscles to contract, keep body temp steady in mammals and birds, build nutrients into amino acids to build proteins
What is the word equation to anaerobic respiration?
Glucose = energy + lactic acid
What is oxygen debt?
When you stop exercising you have to repay the oxygen which didn’t get to your muscles in time because the rest could not keep up. The pulse and breathing rate stay high to rectify the situation. Blood flows through muscles to remove lactic acid by oxidisation.
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribose nucleic acid
