Biology 2a Flashcards
What is cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance which is where most of the chemical reactions happen and contains enzymes which control these chemical reactions
What 5 features do animal cells contain?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes, mitochondria.
In addition to the 5 features of animal cells, what are the 3 features of plant cells?
Cell wall, chloroplasts, and the permanent vacuole
What are ribosomes?
Where proteins are made in the cell
What is mitochondria?
Where most of the reactions for respiration takes place which produces the energy which the cell needs to work
What is the nucleus of a cell?
Contains the genetic material and controls the activities of the cell
What is a cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
What is diffusion?
DIFFUSION IS THE SPREADING OUT OF PARTICLES
FROM AN AREA OF HIGH CONCENTRATION TO AN
AREA OF LOW CONCENTRATION
Name the different parts of the digestive system
Glands, stomach, liver, small intestine, large intestine
What is an organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform a particular function
Give an example of a tissue and its function
Muscular tissue, which contracts to move whatever it’s attached to
Give an example of tissues working together to perform a function
Muscular tissue, which moves the stomach wall to churn up the food
Name two molecules which can diffuse through cell membranes into cells
Oxygen and glucose
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> (sunlight and chlorophyll) glucose + oxygen
Name three features of a yeast cell
Has a nucleus, a cytoplasm, and a cell membrane surrounded by a cell wall
