Biology 1A - Human Biology Flashcards
Name all the food groups you should eat to have a balanced diet.
Carbohydrates Fats Protein Fibre Vitamins and Mineral Ions
Name five health problems that are associated with obesity.
Arthritis Type 2 Diabetes High Blood Pressure Heart Disease Risk some types of cancer
Three ways in which your immune system defends the body against disease.
Antibodies
White Blood Cells
Antigens
In terms of energy what does a person have to do to lose weight?
- Eat less fat or carbohydrates (so that you take in less energy)
- Do more exercise (so that you lose more energy)
Describe how the MRR vaccine prevent you getting measles mumps and rubella.
It injects small amounts of dead or inactive microorganisms. These carry antigens that your body will produce antibodies to attack so that if you do get measles mumps or rubella your body know how to fight it quickly because its fought the weakened version.
Why shouldn’t your doctor give you antibiotics for the flu?
Because viruses invade your body cells and antibiotics kill bad cells they would be killing your own cells which is bad.
Name one type of bacteria that has developed resistance to antibiotics.
MRSA
What practise did Semmelweis introduce in the 1840’s?
Doctors washing hands with antiseptic solution entering the ward to prevent them spreading puerperal fever to the women how where giving birth. Cut death rate from 12% to 2%
Describe the structure of the nervous system and what it does.
- Your sense organs have receptors in them which are groups of cells sensitive to stimulus (light sound smell) – They change it into electrical impulses that send signals to your spine and through the CNS.
- Neurones send instructions to the effectors.
- Effectors (muscles and glands) react accordingly.
What is a synapse?
The connection between two neurones where the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap sending a new electrical signal to the next neurone.
What is the purpose of a reflex action?
Helps prevent injury because neurones go through the reflex arc in the spine and doesn’t need the brain to respond because it automatically triggers the reaction
Describe pathway of reflex arc from stimulus to response.
Stimulates Receptors Sensory neurone Relay neurone Motor neurone Effector
Describe two effects of FSH in the body.
- Cause egg to mature in ovary.
- Cause ovaries to produce oestrogen.
Describe two disadvantages to using the contraceptive pill.
- Doesn’t protect against STDs
- Isn’t 100% effective - Still a slight chance of getting pregnant.
Describe two advantages to using the contraceptive pill.
- Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
- Reduces risk of getting some types of cancer.
