Biology π¦ Flashcards
- When finished memorizing do Google Docs labeled 'Biology questions' and finish all the questions. (on my phone there is a photo that shows words to watch in free-answer question like these)
Identify 7 properties of living organisms
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
Describe three safety precautions you should follow while using a light microscope.
- Do not touch the glass part of the lenses with your fingers. Use only special lens paper to clean the lenses.
- Always keep your microscope covered when not in use.
- Always carry a microscope with both hands. Grasp the arm with one hand and place the other hand under the base for support.
What is the function of the nucleus of a cell?
The nucleus controls the cellβs behavior by storing DNA with instructions for growth and function.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane protects the cell and controls what goes in and out, like nutrients, waste, and other substances.
What is cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is the jelly-like material inside the cell membrane but outside the nucleus, containing organelles and allowing chemical reactions to occur.
Define protoplasm
The protoplasm includes both the cytoplasm and the nucleus, so itβs essentially all the living material within a cell.
Describe a chloroplast.
A chloroplast is a green, oval-shaped organelle found in plant cells and some algae.
Define photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food (glucose) and release oxygen.
Which group of organisms can photosynthesize?
Organisms that can photosynthesize include plants, algae, and some bacteria. These organisms contain chlorophyll or similar pigments to capture sunlight and produce energy.
Why is photosynthesis an important process in ecosystems?
Photosynthesis is important because it produces oxygen, which living organisms need to breathe. It also creates food for plants, forming the base of the food chain and supporting all other life in the ecosystem.
Name the 4 basic groups of organic compounds.
The four basic groups of organic compounds are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Together, they play essential roles in living organisms
What is a trace element?
What is an ion?
Define diffusion
Explain why most plants appear green to our eyes.
