Q

What are rod cells

A

Rod cells work best when there is not too much light around. You’ve got 120 million of them, mostly around the outer regions of your retina.

Q

What are cone cells

A

Cone cells let you see in colour, there are 7 million of them mist tightly packed in the fovea. They work best in bright light.

Q

What are the 3 different type of cone cells

A

They’re called blue, red, and green. But that doesn’t mean that they only respond to light in that colour, each type of cone cell differs in its wavelengths (e.g. red is the longest wavelength). Together they allow us to see at least 2 million different colours.

Q

What are light waves?

A

A light wave is a moving wave of energy made up of particles called photons. Light waves come in different lengths, and the lengths determine their colour.

Q

Why are people colour blind?

A

People who are colour blind are either missing one of the three types of cone cells or have one type that doesn’t work properly.

Q

What are the 3 parts of the ear and what is it?

A
  • The outer ear (pinna): is the floppy bit we generally call the ‘ear’
The middle ear: Sound waves make the eardrum vibrate. These vibrations are passed on to three bones: malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones process the vibrations as sound and transmit it to the inner ear.
The inner ear: The three tiny bones transmit sound to the cochlea (cock-lee-a), a snail-shell-shaped organ in the ear that sends the signal to the brain, which then combines the signal and works out what it has just heard.

Q

What is the vestibular system?

A

The vestibular system senses changes in the head’s position and movement and transmits this information to the brain, which then re-establishs equilibrium.
