Biology Flashcards
Where is the DNA backbone, what are they made out of and how many are there?
Two DNA backbones, and they are the nucleotide chains. DNA backbones are made of phosphate groups and pentose sugars.
What is a gene?
A sequence of DNA that codes for specific traits
What are autosomes?
Control all characteristics except sex-linked ones
What are sex chromosomes?
They determine the biological sex of an organism
What are the two types of cells?
Somatic cells and sex cells
What is a somatic cell?
Any cell except egg and sperm cells. They contain autosomes.
What are sex cells?
Gametes - reproduction cells.
What is a haploid?
Single set of chromosomes
What is a diploid?
Two sets of chromosomes (one from each parent)
What is a homologous chromosome?
Chromosomes 1-22:
1. Same size + length
2. Same centromere position
3. Same genes at same gene loci
What is a chromosome?
Thread-like structure made up of DNA
