biological treatments Flashcards
what did dais find
less relapse with drug treatment than a placebo- effective
what is a problem with drugs
30% are intolerant and they only deal with positive effects
why is drug therapy appropriate
it blocks biological receptors
why are drugs not appropriate
they induce side effects such as Tardive dyskinsia
what did Tharyan and Adams find
ECT was more effective than no therapy
Whats a problem with ECT
It is less effective than drugs
why is ECT inappropriate
side effects such as memory loss
Why is psychosurgery appropriate
41% recovered or improved
Why is psychosurgery not effective
Its only a way of managing, not a cure
Why is psychosurgery appropriate
It deals with the cause (abnormal functioning)
Why if psychosurgery not appropriate
there are irreversible and permanent effects
what are drug treatments
anti-psychotics:
typical anti-psychotics such as chlorpromazine treat positive symptoms by binding to D2 receptors to dopamine can’t stimulate them and cause hallucinations and delusions
atypical anti-psychotics block serotonin and reduce both positive and negative symptoms
what is ECT
electroconvulsive therapy:
an electric shock which is either unilateral or bilateral induces a seizure for between 15 and 60 seconds. Patients are also given muscle relaxant to ensure no damage and it is suggested that each patient receives 6 to 12 treatments in total with up to 3 a week
what is psychosurgery
until 1935 this was known as prefrontal lobotomy
involves damaging portions of the brain tissue to sever the connection of frontal lobes and the rest of the brain
