  • Many drugs have side effects such as headaches
  • Can take several weeks to have an effect
  • Some research has found links to an increase in suicidal thoughts
  • May be masking a problem

How does ECT work?

A
  • Patient put under anaesthetic and electrodes placed on their scalp
  • Electrical pulse excited brain cells causing them to fire in unison and produce a seizure
