Biological Treatment of One Specific Disorder Flashcards
1
Q
What are two ways we can change our physiology?
A
- Drug therapy
- ECT (electroconvulsive therapy)
2
Q
What is a strength of drug therapy?
A
-Can alter the chemical imbalance in depression (low serotonin) and alleviate symptoms of depression
3
Q
What are some weaknesses of drug therapy?
A
- Many drugs have side effects such as headaches
- Can take several weeks to have an effect
- Some research has found links to an increase in suicidal thoughts
- May be masking a problem
4
Q
How does ECT work?
A
- Patient put under anaesthetic and electrodes placed on their scalp
- Electrical pulse excited brain cells causing them to fire in unison and produce a seizure
5
Q
Why could ECT work?
A
- May alter the neurotransmitters in the brain
- Also suggested it adjusts the stress hormone to alleviate symptoms of depression
6
Q
What is a strength of ECT?
A
-Can be a ‘quick fix’ for depression
7
Q
What are some weaknesses of ECT?
A
- Can take a few sessions
- Could potentially cause harm
8
Q
What is TMS?
A
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
- Magnetic field applied to prefrontal cortex
- Causes small electrical current in brain that stimulate cells in region of brain involving mood regulation and depression
