Biological Policies Flashcards
what is formal policy making
This refers to policies that ‘control crime’ such as custodial sentences or token economy systems in prisons. They are state punishment policies and imposed on offenders
what is informal policy making
This refers to policies that help to reduce crime and are often in the form of treatments or interventions, such as
alcohol support groups or brain
surgeries to prevent behaviours.
Informal policy is linked to
non-official ideas to prevent crime.
assess the use of neurochemicals in informing policy development
-use of diet to positively affect aggressive behaviour which in turn may result in reduced crime
- lower than average serotonin levels were found in violent offenders(vikkunen er al) . Hence a serotonin enriched diet with food such as tuna and salmon may reduce crime
- research has shownn that a sugar reduced diet reduced anti social behaviour
assess how eugenics affect policy development
-involves the claim that inheritance can explain the presence of human behaviour including criminality
- examples of use of eugenics include nazi germany, where sterilisation of ppl with undesirable traits was promoted
- sterilisation laws would prevent incarcerated criminals from giving birth to criminal offspring. research suggested that criminal fathers are more likely to have criminal children (osborn and west)
