biological organization Flashcards
Generate a list identifying different ways to organize biological systems.
-observe
-classify
-separate based on traits
-ways: dichatomus key, phylogram, cladograms, venn diagram, list
Why is studying biological systems from multiple perspectives more appropriate? Is this
realistic?
- different perspectives give more info/insight
- different interpreations of surroundings in diff perspectives based on time and space
- different perspectives can yield different results
Explain why hierarchical arrangements of organization, for biological systems, are
erroneous. Can you identify some benefits
- can tell us that one organism is more “complex” than another. ie. humans are more complex than bacteria, but that doesnt take into account different traits/adapations/abilites
- for example some animals have a fourth cone which allows them to see UV light. humans do not have this, but we have a more complex brain.
What are the components/sections of a scientific study?
replicate, observe, replicate, observe …. so on
What is a complex system? Identify a complex system and outline a scientific study
aimed at understanding this system from two levels of organization (i.e. two
perspectives).
a system composed of many components which may interact with eachother
- an example is leaf cutter ants. They chew up leaves and use that as their fertilizer to crops: fungus
- they xultivate fungal gardens by providing fresh cut leaves. the fungus acts as a food source for the ant’s larve
