Biological Molecules: Biochemical Tests (DR.A) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the BENEDICT’S REAGENT?
A
BLUE SOLTUION which is used to TEST for REDUCING SUGARS and NON-REDUCING SUGARS
2
Q
What is the BIURETS TEST?
A
A simple BIOCHEMICAL REACTION to detect the presence of A PROTEIN, if the BIURET’S SOLUTION turn PURPLE then a PROTEIN IS PRESENT
3
Q
What is an EMULSION TEST?
A
A test for LIPIDS
You mix your SAMPLE WITH ETHANOL and then ADD WATER, if a CLOUDY EMULSION FORMS then a LIPID IS PRESENT
4
Q
What is the NON-REDUCING SUGAR TEST?
A
-Following a NEGATIVE R-S TEST
-Heat solution with HCL to HYDROLYSE the NON-RS into it’s MONOSACCHARIDES
-Then perform BENEDICT’S TEST again
-If POSITIVE after HYDROLYSIS, NON-RS is PRESENT
