Biological explanations Flashcards
Explain the role of chromosomes in determining Sex
Chromosomes in the human body are arranged into 23 pairs, the 23rd pair determines your biological sex. Female structure is XX, Male is XY. Half the sperm carries half a X chromosome and half a Y chromosome.
What is the SRY gene and what does it do ?
‘Sex determining region Y’ or SRY. The SRY gene causes testes to develop in an XY embryo. These produce androgens, male sex hormones. Androgens cause the embryo to become a mlae, without them, the embryo develops into a female.
Explain the case study of the Batista boys (Influence of hormones)
4 Batista boys born with XY chromosomes, making them genetically males, however due to delayed development in the womb, they were born females. It was then the testosteronne during puberty that triggered the development that should have happened when they were in the womb, turning them into boys.
Explain Kilnefelter’s syndrome
Bilogically male with feminine characteristics. XXY.
causes reduced body hair, longer limbs, Breast developments.
Explain the Turners syndrome
Femlaes with only one alloted X chromosmes instead of two. XO.
Causes no mestural cycle, dont develop breasts at puberty, hips are bigger than waist and low set of ears.
Explain the David Reimer case
Bought to standard circumcision, during process his penis was burned off, led to Davids sex change, he was constructed a vagina and given hormonal supplements, she acted like a boy and was condused about topics (conflicting thoughts) at 14 when told abou the acciedent, she became David again, at 38 he committed suicide.
