Biological evolution Flashcards
What is the process of evolution?
(3 different scales)
- Microevolution -> 2.Speciation -> 3. Macroevolution
What is the definition of microevolution?
evolutionary changes in a population of species over time
rmb importance of variation and the mechanisms leading to evolution -particulary natural selection
What is the definition of speciation?
process in which new species originate ffrom existing ones
What is the definition of Macroevolution?
study of the broad pattern of evolution above the species level
What is the neo-Darwinism theory?
Traits which are passed down to offspring are coded for by genes
- inheritance of traits is though alleles passed down to offspring in gametes.
What does neo-Darwinism thoery explains?
The source of variation in a population is due to
1. mutation (gene/chromosomal)
2. crossing over and independent assortment in meiosis
3. random fusion of gametes -> produce new combi of alleles
**
What does it mean when microevolution has taken place?
When the **allele frequence in the gene pool of population changes (↑/↓) over time
What is a population?
A group of interbreeding species
What does the gene pool of a population mean?
The complete set of all genes that would be found in a population of a species
show the genetic diverisity in a population
What is allele frequency?
The proportion of one allele relative to all alleles at one gene locus in the population
