Biological compounds, Ions and Water Flashcards
Biological Compounds
Uses of Magnesium
An important constituent of chlorophyll and is essential for photosynthesis.
Mammals need it for their bones.
Uses of Iron
Transports oxygen in red blood cells.
Uses of Phosphate
- Makes nucleotides.
- Important in phospholipids which are biological membranes.
Uses of calcium
- Create strong bones and teeth
- Provides strength in cell walls.
What is the definition of nucleotide?
An organic molecule that is the building block of DNA and RNA.
Water is a dipole. What does dipole mean?
A positive charge one end (H) and a negative charge the other end (O).
What is cohesion and what does it do?
Due to the many water molecules, they become hard to separate and stick to each other. It allows water to be drawn up the xylem.
What is surface tension and what does it do?
Cohesion at the surface of water causes surface tension. This helps animals such as pond skaters.
What is specific heat capacity and what does it do?
Hydrogen bonds between water molecules restrict their movement, restricting an increase in the kinetic energy, therefore resisting an increase in temperature. This maintains the temperature for wildlife.
What is density in water good for?
Maintains habitats such as ice floating on water.
Why is water transparent?
So light can pass through for photosynthesis.
