Biological Approach - Treating OCD Flashcards
1
Q
SSRIs
A
Block reuptake of serotonin, increasing presence in the synapse so it can bind with post-synaptic receptors, reducing symptoms
2
Q
SNRIs
A
Block reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, relieving anxiety and compulsions
3
Q
Tricyclic antidepressants
A
Block reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, increasing presence in the synapse, reducing symptoms
4
Q
Benzodiazepines
A
Increase activity of GABA which binds to receptor site of neuron so neuron less likely to fire electrical signal, reducing anxiety of neurons
5
Q
Strengths of the biological approach to treating OCD
A
- Cost effective and less destructive than talking therapies (eg. Less financial pressure on NHS, patient takes daily tablet)
- Supportive evidence for SSRIs (eg. Soomro meta-analysis found on average 70% of OCD patients improved, suggesting serotonin plays a role)
6
Q
Limitations of the biological approach to treating OCD
A
- Unpleasant side effects (eg. SSRIs can cause indigestion, blurred vision, low sex drive and Clomiparmine erectile dysfunction, weight gain)
- Treats symptoms not cause (eg, Koran suggests CBT less prone to relapse so more effective long term solution)
