Q

Strengths of the biological approach to treating OCD

A
  • Cost effective and less destructive than talking therapies (eg. Less financial pressure on NHS, patient takes daily tablet)
  • Supportive evidence for SSRIs (eg. Soomro meta-analysis found on average 70% of OCD patients improved, suggesting serotonin plays a role)

Q

Limitations of the biological approach to treating OCD

A
  • Unpleasant side effects (eg. SSRIs can cause indigestion, blurred vision, low sex drive and Clomiparmine erectile dysfunction, weight gain)
  • Treats symptoms not cause (eg, Koran suggests CBT less prone to relapse so more effective long term solution)
