biological approach Flashcards
what do they believe
- everything was first biological
- biological structures need to be looked (genes)
- mind lives in brain therefore thoughts have a physical basis
explain the genetic basis of behaviour
- behavioural characteristics (intelligence) are inherited
- twin studies by comaring concordance rates can analyse the characteristics they share
evaluate scientific methods of investigation
STRENGTH
- to investigate biological basis of behaviour due to advances in tech we can use fmri + twin studies
- possible to accurately measure processes that are not open to bias
- reliable data
what type of concordance rates do different twins have
monozygote- higher concordance=share 100% genes
diozygote-lower concordance=50% genes like normal siblings
use an example to explain the difference between a genotype and phenotype
- adult twins may look different
- one may have dyed pink hair
- shows human behaviour depends on inherited + enviornment
what is a genotype
-a persons genetic makeup
what is a phenotype?
-genes expressed though characteristics and normally influenced by environmental factors
explain evolution and behaviour
- Charles darwin proposed the theory of natural selection that any genetically determined behaviour that increases survival will continue to future generations
- animals with this trait are more likely to survive and will continue to future generations
evaluate real life application
STRENGTH
- increased understanding of biochemical processes in brain =psychoacitve drugs to treat mental illness
- means sufferers can manage their condition+live normally
evaluate casual conclusions
WEAKNESS
-believe particular drugs reduce symptoms
inacurate as it is like assuming a headache is caused by a lack of paracetomol because it can stop symptoms
