Biological Approach Flashcards
1
Q
Biological approach
A
Explains behaviour through genetic or biochemical processes
2
Q
Genetic basis
A
Inheritance of genes can give a predisposition to certain behaviours
3
Q
Gottesman (1991)
A
48% concordance rate for schizophrenia with MZ twins, 17% for DZ twins
4
Q
Genotype
A
All the genes an individual possesses
5
Q
Phenotype
A
The observable characteristics shown due to the effect of genes and the environment
6
Q
Neuroanatomical basis
A
Different parts of the brain responsible for different functions
7
Q
Strengths of the biological approach
A
- Scientific credibility (eg. Precise, accurate, objective scientific methodology)
- Real world application (eg. Neurotransmitters like antidepressants work to increase serotonin levels in the grain)
8
Q
Limitations of the biological approach
A
- Cannot establish causation (eg. Correlational results only establish association between brain structures and behaviour, not causation)
- Biologically deterministic (eg. Doesn’t take into account environmental interaction, phenotype and free will)
