Biological approach Flashcards
What in the biological approach are viewed to understand behaviour?
Biological structures / Genes / Neurochemistry
What are genotypes?
The way our genetic makeup is
What are phenotypes?
The way our genes are expressed in observable characteristics caused by an interaction of genes and environment
What are monozygotic (identical twins)
Twins from the same eggs and sperm which have split
What are dizygotic twins?
Twins from separate sperm and eggs
Give an example of a Twin study?
A study of concordance rates into depression found that in monozygotic twins there is a 46% chance the other will also have depression suggesting a genetic component
What is the PNS
Peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS
Central nervous system
What is the occipital lobe associated with?
Visual perception
What is the Parietal lobe associated with?
Sensory information
What is the frontal lobe associated with?
Higher order functions
What is the temporal lobe associated with?
Auditory information
Neurochemistry suggests that chemicals can determine our behaviour, what are two neurotransmitters?
Dopamine + Seretonin
How may evolution alter behaviour?
Through natural selection, certain traits and thus behaviours will be passed on for having a survival function
Evaluation of the Biological approach?
- Issue of causation: does the illness cause the biology to alter or visa versa
- Determinism: we are biologically programmed and thus don’t have free will which can null people of blame in a real world situation
- Positive, mental illness and diseases can be treated through drug therapies due to this explanation
