Q

Genetic bias is for behaviour

A

23 pairs of chromosmes inherited from parents and these are and are up of dna and genes genes carry instructions for physical traits and psychological traits

Q

How does win studies help us

A

They compare concordance rates of MZ and DZ twins for a particular trait, assumption that twins share same environment, difference between concordance rate for MZ and DZ twins tell us how much influence genes have on the trait

Q

Natural selection explain behaviour

A

Proposed by Darwin
- stages that ant genetic material that can aid a individuals survival passed onto their offspring with the effect that only those with the alleles that allowed this behaviour will survive and reproduce passing on their genes

Eg. Attachment seeking proximity to their primary caregiver

Q

Nervous system influence behaviour

A

Behaviour is a result of the CNS sending electrical messages to muscles, glands etc to influence a particular response

Q

Endocrine system and glands influence behaviour

A

Nervous system can send signals to glands to release blood streams which then have effects on our behaviour eg flight or fright Response

Q

Weaknesses

A
  • twin studies are used to determine biological basis for a behaviour it’s hard to separate nature vs nurture twins often experience same environments so determining the cause of their behaviour can be hard MZ twins tend to be treated more similarly than DZ difficult to insure concordance rate was definitely due to gentics
  • assumes causality where there may only be correlation for Examples low serotonin levels found in individuals with depression this approach assumes low levels of serotonin cause depression but there are individuals with low serotonin who do not experience depression indicates correlation but not causality

Q

Strengths

A
  • scientific and objective methods of investigation means theories devolved from these are based of reliable data and more likley to be valid
  • treatment implication successful drug treatments have been developed via the biological approach eg antipsychotics to treat schizophrenia
