Biofuels Flashcards
biofuels
fuels derived from recently dead organic material, mainly plant material
how are biofuels produced
crop absorbs CO2 via photosynthesis, crops harvested for biomass, biomass coverted into biofuel via fermentation, liquid biofuel used for transportaton
how is bioetthanol produced
yeast is used to facilitate anaerobic fermentation of sugars, ethanol is produced and diffuses out of the cell, ethanol is then distilled and converted into a usuable form, bioethanol is usually mixed with other fuels to increase octane levels and improve exhuast emissions
two main types of biofuels that that are produced from biomass
bioethanol and biodesel
how does bioethanol and biodiesel differ
bioethanol is produced from fermenting sugars, biodiesel produced from the formatation of fatty acids from natural oils
strengths of biofuels
climate impact,, enrgy security and localised energy -biomass dourced/farmed around the world
weaknesses of biofuels
food vs fuel, cost and difficulty of uptake, second order environmental impacts
