Infertility
A couple cannot conceive a child
Why might someone be infertile?
Age, endometriosis, dugs/smoking/alcohol/vaping, hormonal disorders
How can someone overcome infertility?
Natural methods, surgery, assisted conception
What are the natural methods of overcoming infertility?
By making healthy lifestyle choices eg exercising and having a good, healthy diet
What medicinal methods are there to overcoming intertility?
If there is a problem with hormones then taking fertility drugs can help, especially if the cause of infertility is unknown
What surgery can someone get to help overcome infertility?
If a fallopian tube is blocked or some other internal problem. Sometimes an ovary transplant could be possible for a woman who can’t produce her own eggs
What does assisted conception do to help overcome infertility?
IVF and IUI are available. These methods are the most popular today, even though it can have a low success rate and there are several ethical issues relating to these techniques
IUI
Intrauterine insemination. Also known as artificial insemination. Involves inserting sperm directly into the womb
Who was the first IVF baby?
Louise Brown in 1978
IVF
In vitro fertilisation. Involves egg and sperm being brought together in a test tube or petri dish by doctors/outside the body
What concerns are there about IVF?
- fertilising more eggs than needed can lead to spare embryos; what happens to them?
