bioenergetics test Flashcards
what reaction is photosynthesis and what energy does it use
photosynthesis is a chemical reaction which uses light energy
where does photosynthesis take place
photosynthesis takes place inside chloroplasts
what absorbs the light for photosynthesis
the green pigment inside chloroplasts called chlorophyll absorbs the light
begins w e
what reaction is photosynthesis
photosynthesis is a endothermic reaction
word equation for photosynthesis
water + carbon dioxide -> glucose + oxygen
whats the symbol equation for photosynthesis
6H20 + 6CO2 -> C6H12O6+602
where do plants get water from
water is obtained from the roots by osmosis -> root hair cells have a large surface area to support osmosis happening faster
where do plants get CO2 from
diffuses into the leaves via open pores called stomata
what are the 5 uses of glucose
respiration - releases energy from glucose
stored as starch - can be used when plant is not photosynthesising as much e.g. in the dark. starch is insoluble
making cellulose for the cell wall
making amino acids - glucose combines w nitrate ions to make amino acids which then go to make proteins
stored as fats and oils
whats the test to detect for the presence of starch
use iodine positive result for starch - iodine would turn blue/black
test to detect for the proteins of starch
use iodine negative results would be if iodine would remain orange/brown
why would green plants exposed to light will test positive for iodine whereas green plants exposed to no light wont
the chlorophyll is green and absorbs light needed for photosynthesis. photosynthesis can occur and glucose produces excess glucose is stored as starch. green plants exposed to no light for the chloroplasts to absorb. no photosynthesis will occur no glucose will be produced so no excess glucose to be stored as starch
what are the 3 main limiting factors of photosynthesis are
light intensity, CO2 concentration and temp
why could chlorophyll also be a limiting factor
chlorophyll can also be a limiting factor of photosynthesis as it absorbs the light needed
why would a plant have a reduced number of chlorophyll give 3 examples
rose black spot, tobacco mosaic virus and lack of magnesium ions f
