Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
An exothermic reaction, which transfers energy from glucose, and is continuously occurring in living cells.
What are three examples of how organisms use energy?
To build larger molecules from smaller.
Maintain body temperature.
Muscular contraction.
What is metabolism?
All the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
What is aerobic respiration?
Takes place whenever there is enough oxygen, and is the more efficient way to transfer energy from glucose continuously.
Specifically used in mitochondria.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+oxygen -> carbon dioxide+ water
What is anaerobic respiration?
Used when we can’t get enough oxygen to keep up with aerobic respiration.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> lactic acid
What are two reasons why we prefer not to use anaerobic respiration?
There is an incomplete breakdown of glucose molecule, so it doesn’t unlock all the energy.
Lactic acid builds up, which has to be removed.
