Animal cells Flashcards
What is the purpose of cytoplasm?
It is where chemical reactions take place(eg the first stage of respiration)
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
It controls the molecules that can enter and leave the cell.
What is the purpose of the mitochondria?
It is where aerobic respiration takes place.
What is the purpose of ribosomes?
It is the site of protein synthesis.
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated cell which can be produced into to more cells of the same type and can differentiate to form other types of cells.
How do bone marrow transplants work?
First the bone marrow has to be destroyed using radiation.
Secondly the patient then receives a transplant of bone marrow.
Lastly they divide forming new bone marrow. They also differentiate and form blood cells.
How does therapeutic cloning work?
Firstly an embryo is produced with the same genes as the patient.
Secondly it can be transplanted into the patient without being rejected by the immune system.
Lastly the stem cell can then differentiate to replace cells which have stopped working correctly.
What are the problems with bone marrow transplants?
The donor has to be compatible with the patient if not this can cause it to attack the patient’s body, and Viruses can be passed from the donor to the patient.
