Bioenergetics Flashcards
What do you plan to use for their source of energy
Light
What is the reaction that plants used to trap light energy
Photosynthesis
Is photosynthesis endothermic or exothermic
Endothermic as it takes in energy
Where does photosynthesis take place in the plant
Takes place in the leaf (contains chlorophyll)
What is the reaction for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water ——> glucose + oxygen
What is the reaction of photosynthesis in letters and numbers
CO2 + H2O ——> C6H12O6 + O2
What happens if we increase the light intensity for photosynthesis
If we increase the light intensity the rate of photosynthesis increases so the reaction gets faster
What are the limiting reactants for photosynthesis
Light, carbon dioxide, amount of chloroplast and temperature
What is one use of glucose
To release energy from respiration
What does glucose produce
Glucose produces insoluble storage molecules starch which can be converted back to glucose when needed e.g night
What can glucose be converted into
Glucose can be converted into fat and oil storage form of energy
What is the cell wall made of
Glucose that forms cellulose to give strength and structure to cells
What else can glucose produce
Amino acids used to synthesise proteins
Is respiration exothermic or endothermic
Exothermic as it releases energy
What are the two types of respiration
Aerobic and anaerobic
What is the reaction for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen ——> carbon dioxide + water
Does a Aerobic respiration release a lot or not a lot of energy
It releases a lot of energy
Why does aerobic respiration release a lot of energy
Because the glucose molecule has been fully oxidised
What are the two types of anaerobic respiration
In muscles and in plant cells
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles
Glucose ——> lactic acid
Why does anaerobic respiration release less energy than aerobic respiration
Because the oxidation of glucose is incomplete
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants cells
Glucose ——> ethanol + Carbon dioxide
What is fermentation
The anaerobic respiration in yeast cells
What is fermentation used for
To make alcohol such as beer or makes yeast to produce bread
