Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
Endothermic reaction that takes place in green plants and algae
What is the equation for photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide + Water —> Glucose + Oxygen
CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 + O2
What are the limiting factors for photosynthesis
Chlorophyll - lack of nutrients
Light intensity - less light for photosynthesis to occur
CO2 concentration - lowers the rate of photosynthesis
Temperature - when its too high, the enzymes will denature so it can’t occur
Required practical : Investigating the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
What is the method
Test tube is clamped 10cm away from the lamp
Add pondweed to the water
A capillary tube and syringe are attached to the test tube
Let the pondweed photosynthesis for 5 minutes
Count the bubbles that appear during this time
Repeat twice
Repeat this again at different distances
Required practical : Investigating the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
What are the independent, dependent and control variables
Independent - distance of the lamp
Dependent - number of bubbles produced
Control - species of seaweed, type of lamp, amount of water
What is glucose used for
Respiration - releases energy to build up new cells and grow
Make cell walls - converted into cellulose
Stored as starch:
Stored in roots and used when photosynthesis
Doesn’t bloat storage cells by osmosis
Making fruit:
Deliberately taste nice so animals will eat and spread the seeds
Glucose and fructose is turned into sucrose for storing fruits
What aerobic respiration and its equation
Respiration that happens when oxygen is present
Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + Water
What is anaerobic respiration and its equation in animals and plants/yeast
Respiration that happens when oxygen isn’t present
Animal:
Glucose —> lactic acid
Plant/yeast:
Glucose —> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
What happens to your body when you exercise
Heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume increase to supply the muscles with more oxygenated blood
If insufficient oxygen is supplied, anaerobic respiration takes place which causes lactic acid to build up and create oxygen debt
What is oxygen debt and how does it go away
The amount of oxygen needed after exercise to react with the lactic acid
Lactic acid + Oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + Water
What is metabolism
Sum of all the reactions that happen in a cell or the body
What are some factors that affect metabolism
Age
Diet
Gender
