Bioeneegetics Flashcards
What are uses for glucose in a plant?
- Store insoluble starch S
-to make cellulose. C
-produce amino acids for protein synthesis A
-used for respiration to release energy R - produce oils and Fats for storage F
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
- light
- chlorophyll
- carbon dioxide
What happens to the rate of photosynthesis when the temperature is increased?
The rate of photosynthesis increases with temperature until it reaches an optimum.
Why does the rate of photosynthesis start to decrease as the temperature increases above optimum?
The enzymes controlling photosynthesis are denatured
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration ?
Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
what is oxygen debt ?
when the body has to take in extra oxygen to break down the
lactic acid in the
muscle cells
Why does your body temperature increase during exercise?
During exercise, your body temperature increases because muscles burn energy, generating heat as a byproduct, and the body’s metabolism increases to support the activity.
Why do we continue to breathe deeply and quickly for a while after anaerobic exercise?
A person continues to breathe more deeply to take in additional oxygen to repay this oxygen debt.
how do you test if photosynthesis has occurred in a leaf
- dye with iodine
- leaf turns black/blue if starch is present
How does the amount of chlorophyll impact the rate of photosynthesis
Chlorophyll is a pigment in the leaf that converts light energy to food for the plant, and is therefore essential. If chlorophyll levels are reduced, then the rate of photosynthesis would decrease.
What is oxygen debt?
when the body has to take in extra oxygen to break down the lactic acid in the muscle cells
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose → lactic acid (+ energy).
What is metabolism?
All of the chemical reactions that take place inside living cells.
