Biodiversity Science Vocab Flashcards
Species
Living things of the same kind that are able to reproduce successfully
Ecosystem
An environment where living things interact with other organism and non living things
Population
Group of individuals of the same species living in an area
Community
Group of populations from different species living In an area
Diversity
Variation of living things present in a particular ecosystem
Genus
A category in a classification of living things. More general than species but more specific than family
Kingdom
One of the five or six main categories in the current classification system of living things
Symbiosis
Relationship between two different species
Commensalism
Relationship between species where one benefits and the other isn’t harm not benefiting
Mutualism
Relationship between species where both are benefiting
Parasitism
Relationship between species where one benefits and the other is harmed
Interspecies competition
Two or more species using the same limited resource
Niche
The role of an diva isn’t or species in an environment including where it lives, how it reproduces and their interactions with other organisms
Resource partitioning
Division of a resource among 2 or more coexisting species such that the niche of species differs slightly
Variability
Variations with a species
Natural selection
Process where environment selects which individuals will survive and reproduce
Heritable
Passed down from generation to generation
Non heritable
Not passed down from generation to generation
Discrete variation
Variation
Ex being albino or not
Continuous variation
Variation in a heritable characteristic that falls within range like height
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction without combination of sec cells causing identical offspring and parent
Binary fission
A kind of asexual reproduction in organisms which a parent cell divided exactly in two identical cells
Budding
A type of asexual reproduction where new organisms develops from outgrowth, or bud, on the planet
Spores
Cells produced by asexual reproduction in certain organisms such as ferns, which can develop directly into an adult
Vegetative reproduction
Asexual reproduction in plants that doesn’t involve the formation of a seed
Sexual reproduction
Reproduction involving the exchange in genetics through offspring that is genetically different from parents
Gametes
Sex cell either female or male that combines with a fertilized cell ( zygote) creating a new person
Sperm cells
A make sex cell
Egg cells ( ova )
Female sex cell
Fertilization
The combination of the female and male sex cell
Zygote
A fertilized egg
Cleavage
First divisons of a fertilized egg
Embryo
An undeveloped organism in its beginning stages
Pollen
Fine yellow powder on the anthers of flowers consisting of grains that contain make sex cells (gametes)
Stamen
The male part of a flower
Anther
Part of the stamen that produces pollen and stores it
Ovules
Sac containing the female sex cells (gametes) of a plant
Pistil
Female reproductive organ of a flowe
Stigma
Female part of a flier, which receives pollen
Style
The structure that supports the stigma and connects it with the ovary of a plant
Ovary
Female reproductive organ in which egg cells are produced, in plants the structure contains the ovules
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from anther to stigma
