Biodiversity Lesson 4: Domain bacteria and Domain Archaea Flashcards
what is included in domain bacteria and what are their characteristic’s?
-large and diverse group of organisms that consist of prokyratic
characteristics:
1. have no nucleus
2. cell walls contain protien peptudoglycan
3. grow everywhere on earth
what are the types of bacteria? how do we classify them?
(3 types)
-classify them by their shape
Types
1. cocci–>round
2. bacilli–>rod-shaped
3. spirilla –>spiral-shaped
what are the prefix’s of the characteristics in Bacteria growth?
- diplo–>arranged in pairs
- staphylo–>arranged in clusters
- strepto–>cells arranged in a chain
what are the types of bacterial respiration?
(4 types)
- obligate aerobes
- microaerophile
- obligate anaerobes
- facultative anaerobes
what are obligate aerobes
need constant o2 supply
what are microaerophiles
need very low o2 conc. <21%
what are obligate anaerobes
must live in absence of o2
what are facultative anaerobes
they use fermentation of organic molecules for energy like obligate anaerobes do but are not harmed by oxygen
what are the two ways Bactria can produce energy
- autotrophs
- heterotrophs
what are included in the autotroph category
- phototrophic autotrophs
- chemotrophic autotrophs
what are included in the heterotrophic category
- chemotrophic heterotrophic
- photosynthetic heterotrophic
what do phototrophic autotrophs do?
use light energy to create carbohydrates
what do chemotrophic autotrophs do?
use inorganic chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, nitrites , ammonia, sulfur and iron as energy
what do chemotrophic heterotrophs do?
break down organic molecules for energy
what do photosynthetic heterotrophs do?
can obtain energy wither through photosynthesis or break down of organic molecules
