Biodiversity, Evolution, Disease Flashcards
Name for the study of evolutionary relationships between species.
Phylogeny.
Where do B lymphocytes mature?
In the Bone marrow.
Where do T lymphocytes mature?
In the Thymus gland.
Example of a disease caused by a virus:
Tobacco Mosaic Virus
Example of a disease caused by a bacteria:
Ring Rot
Example of a disease caused by a fungus:
Black Sigatoka
Example of a disease caused by a protist:
Late Blight
What does Tobacco Mosaic Virus do to plants?
Damages their leaves, fruits and flowers. Stunts growth and yield.
What does Ring Rot do?
Damages leaves, fruits and tubers. Once a field is infected, it can’t be used for 2 years.
What does Black Sigatoka do to plants?
Destroys leaves which turn black and can’t photosynthesise. Reduces yield by 50%.
What does Late Blight do to plants?
Destroys leaves, fruit and tubers. Develops large sunken gold/brown firm spots with rings on tomatoes. Plant can collapse and die in 10 days.
Solution to Tobacco Mosaic Virus:
Resistant strain
About Ring Rot:
Bacteria. Gram positive. Affects tomatoes, potatoes and aubergines. No organelles like mitochondria.
About Tobacco Mosaic Virus:
Virus. Affects tobacco plants and many others, such as the leaves of tomatoes plants.
About Black Sigatoka:
Fungus. Affects bananas, can be seen on their leaves.
