Biodiversity Flashcards
Interspecific variation
The differences between species
Intraspecific variation
Variation between members of the same species
Continuous variation
Variation where there are two extremes and a full range of values in between
Discontinuous Variation
Where there are distinct categories and nothing in between
SID
n = Number of organisms of the species
N = Total number of organisms
Comparing stability of SID in contrasting areas
Higher SID = more stable
Suggest measures that could be put in place to protect the biodiversity of moorland habitats
Give area protected / Red listed status
In Situ:
- Education
- ref. restoration
-limit access/ no hunting
Ex Situ:
- remove seeds from endangered plants and store in seed banks
- Captive species programmes / species reintroduction
Mark - Recapture
C1 = Captured individuals
C2 = Recaptured
C3 = Already marked
Total population size estimate = (C1 x C2) / C3
Different types of sampling methods
Opportunistic = decisions prior
Stratified = dividing habitat into areas that appear different
Random = Random coordinates
Systematic = samples taken at fixed intervals
