biodiversity Flashcards
what is ecosystem diversity?
ecosystem diversity describes the variety of biological communities and their associations with the ecosystem in which they live.
what is species diversity?
species diversity is described as the number of species and abundance of each species that live in a particular location.
what is genetic diversity?
genetic diversity is the diversity and variability of different genes (different inherited traits) within a species.
define ecosystem.
an ecosystem is a community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
biotic and abiotic features of the ecosystem
define community.
a community is all of the populations of different species that live in the same area and interact with one another.
define population.
a population is a group of organisms of one species in a particular location at a particular time.
define species.
any group of individuals that are capable of interbreeding with each other but not with members of any other species. They produce fertile offspring.
define biodiversity.
variety of all living things and includes diversity in genetics, species and ecosystems.
what are biotic factors?
living components of an ecosystem, ie. producer, consumer, decomposer, competitors and pathogens.
what are abiotic factors?
non living components of the ecosystem, they interact with the biotic factors.
