Biodiversity 1-2 Flashcards
Variation
-Exists within same & between different species
-Allow ecosystems to remain healthy & recover fast
-Measured with diversity index
Continuous- variety of different possibilities for the same trait (not specific, height, weight, hair color, etc..)
Discrete- traits fall into specific categories (detached earlobes, blood type, etc..)
Survival
-Goal of all living things is to grow & reproduce (uses diversity, adaptation, & variation)
Species
-Organism that interbreeds in nature & produce fertile offspring
Speciation- the development of different species from a common ancestry
Adaptations
-Specific variations inherited trait that increase an organisms chance of survival in a specific environment (structural or behavioral)
Niche
-Where an organism lives & what it does
Broad Generalists- adapt to many environmental changes & utilize many food sources to survive (large pop, fewer species)
Narrow Niche (specialists)- need to out-compete other organisms for resources (small pop, variety of species)
Competition
-When an essential resource becomes scarce
-Between organisms of same or different species
Symbiosis
-Organism with relationships with organisms of a different species (benefit 1 organism at least)
Mutualism- both benefit (clown fish & sea anemone)
Parasitism- 1 benefits, other harmed (tapeworms & humans)
Commensalism- 1 benefits, other neutral (?????)
Biological Diversity
-Number & variety of species in ecosystem
-Decreases towards poles (variation in temp & humidity, shelter & food more scarce)
-Increase competition for resources near equator (high biodiversity, stable climate, food sources & shelter plentiful)
BD Index- amount of species diversity in area
Dependency
-Species linked by what each species needs to survive
