Biochemistry - Lipids Flashcards
What are the elements that compose a Lipid?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen (CHO)
What are the three types of Lipids?
- triglyceride (fats + oils)
- phospholipids
- steroids
What is the structure of triglycerides?
1 glycerol head and 3 fatty acids
What are Lipids good for?
- energy storage
- insolation against heat loss
- building blocks and cell membranes
- structure
- protection or major organs
- signalling
Why are fats and oils good for energy storage?
- efficient cus of high concentration of C-H bonds
- most fats contain more than 40 carbon atoms
- ratio of C-H bonds to C atoms is more than twice that of carbohydrates
What are the two types/flavours of fatty acids/triglycerides?
saturated and unsaturated.
what are two important traits of a saturated fatty acid?
- single-bonded carbons only
- solid at room temp
What are two important traits of unsaturated fatty acids?
- one or more double bonded carbons
- liquid at room temp
What type of fat provides more energy?
the more highly saturated
What do double bonds cause in the fatty acid tails?
kinks or bends
Do Triglycerides mix with water? Why?
No. they are neutral and thus hydrophobic. But will mix with other neutral substances.
