Biochemistry (Lipids) Flashcards
saturated fatty acids
do not contain carbon-carbon double bond. their shape is linear
unsaturated fatty acids
contain 1 carbon-carbon double bond they have a bent shape
polyunsaturated fatty acids
contain 2 or more carbon-carbon double bonds
Triglyceride
Triglyceride are formed with glycerol and 3 fatty acid molecules.
a condensation reaction happens which creates 3 H20 as byproducts
Triglyceride includes the 3 fatty acids
Lipids functions
energy storage- lipids are high in energy
membrane structure- phospholipids form bilayer which keeps plasma membranes stable. cholesterol is soluble in lipids
thermal insulation- good thermal insulators. they do not conduct heat easily, keeps animals warm.
electrical insulation- good electrical insulators.do not conduct electricity. lipids layers insulate nerve cells.
lipids vs carbohydrates
lipids are more suitable for long term energy storage because it has higher energy per gram and it takes longer to break down lipids.
triglycerides are stored in specialized cells called adipose cells. gylcogen is stored in muscle tissue and liver.
