Biochemistry Flashcards
How can osteoporosis be diagnosed?
DEXA scan (measure of bone mineral density).
Serum calcium and phosphate levels are normal.
What abnormal biochemical findings can be found in osteomalacia or rickets?
Low calcium.
Low serum phosphate.
High serum alkaline.
What abnormal biochemical findings can be found in hyperparathyroidism?
Serum PTH is elevated.
Calcium is high.
Phosphate is normal or low.
What abnormal biochemical findings can be seen in hyperparathyroidism?
Very high serum calcium levels -> emergency treatment of IV fluids, bisphosphonates and calcitonin.
What abnormal biochemical findings are found in Paget’s disease?
Serum alkaline phosphatase is raised.
Calcium and phosphorus levels usually normal.
