Biochemistry Flashcards
Inorganic
Molecules that don’t have carbon or hydrogen or were not made from a living thing
Ex. Apples mass produced from chemicals
Alex Smith
Period 4/5
Organic
Molecules from living things and have carbon and hydrogen in them.
Ex. Apple orchards growing apples from trees
Cohesion
When molecules stick to each other or other types of molecules
Ex. Water molecules stick together for surface tension so we can float the paper clip on water.
Adhesion
When molecules have partial polarity, so adhesion is a positive partial polarity.
Ex. Water sticking to the side of the glass cup
Solution
The mixture you are creating
Ex. Iodine and vinegar
Solute
The dissolve able chemical put in a solution
Ex. Salt
Solvent
What liquid the solute is dissolving in.
Ex. Water
Carbohydrate/ monosaccharide/ simple sugars
Made of sugars and starches
Ex. Noodles
Lipid/ 1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids
Fats in your food
Ex. Butter
Protein/ amino acids
Meats
Ex. Beef
Nucleic acids
DNA
Ex. The directions to make proteins
Catalyst
Inorganic or organic substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction with out entering the reactions itself.
Ex. Enzymes(organic) and Heat(inorganic)
Enzyme
Organic catalyst made of protein
Most enzymes end with -ase
Active site
The spot on the enzyme where the substrate comes in or breaks off
