Bio Section 3 Flashcards
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid, Carrier of Genetic Information
Gene
Uninterrupted section of DNA
Allele
Variations in traits caused by the different gene sequences
Chromosomes
Bunch of tightly wound up DNA
Hybrid/heterozygote
When both alleles are present but only one trait is expressed
Purebred/Homozygote
If both Chromosomes have the same allele
Base Pairs/Nucleic Acids
The chemical compounds found in DNA that is responsible for carrying the genetic code
Mitosis
Occurs in body to create body cells, and for growth and repair.
- Cell duplicates dna
- then it splits.
- New cells, are clones and proper amount of chromosomes
Meiosis
used to create sex cells.
- dna duplicates
- splitting event 1.
- splitting event 2
- gametes are made. chromosomes are half the regular (haploid)
Dominant Trait
Trait that shows up
Recessive trait
trait that is present in DNA but is not shown
Incomplete Dominance
when both alleles are neither dominant or recessive, and are mixed together.
Deoxyribose
A sugary backbone of DNA
