Bio Section 1 Flashcards
biodiversity
the variety of species within the world or a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Ecosystem
A certain environment where biotic things interact with other biotic and abiotic things
Abiotic
non-living things
Biotic
Living things
Community
all interacting living things within a ecosystem
Population
all members of one SPECIFIC species or groups of species living in the world or particular ecosystem
Linnaeus Classification
A system for classifying organisms. works by separating organisms into gradually more specific categories.
Interdependence
the fact that every species has to rely on other species for survival
Symbiosis
A relationship where species interact with other species directly.
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship where both species benefit
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is not affected
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is harmed.
Interspecies Competition
A form of interaction where neither species benefits. This can come from a variety of sources: competition for food or territory are the most common
Niche
An organisms role in their environment. Basically, where does it get its energy from, its habitat and its effect on abiotic and biotic factors.
Resource Partitioning
Where organisms occupy a slightly different niche in order to avoid interspecies competition
