Bio PAT skills Flashcards
(All skills)
What should your method include?
FIDOELVR: Fixed Variables, Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, Originality, Equipment, Layout, Validity, Results (say WHAT)
How are you supposed to use a syringe?
- eye level
- push out liquid and flick bubbles
- always overfill
How are you supposed to use a thermometer?
- don’t touch bottom of beaker
- bring to eye level
Differentiate between the IV and DV.
CALCULATING CONCENTRATION FORMULA???
Concentration of test tube/ concentration of concentrate x volume of test tube = volume of concentrate
How do you make an experiment accurate?
Maintain fixed variables (eg. Time, temperature — never room temp — and volume.) NEVER SAY AMOUNT OF. NEVER REPEAT VARIABLES. BE SPECIFIC. ALWAYS OPT FOR SOLUTION OVER SOLUTES/SOLVENTS.
How do you make an experiment reliable?
Repeat the experiment/ increase the sample size of.the.same.variable!!!/ add a control
What do you have to watch out for in terms of tables?
«Colour change»: one column
« colour before and after»: two columns
IV & DV 2
HEADING HAS TO BE SPECIFIC
What do you have to watch out for in terms of concentration methods?
Always ensure the amount of liquid in the beaker /test tubes is the same in all of them.
What does «improving the design of an experiment» entail?
It’s subjective. Include other factors relevant to the actual experiment.
How do you answer what the purpose of a «control» is?
TO !!!!COMPARE!!!! to the
either the IV to ensure its due to that; to compare to use as a benchmark to see, comparison of results to see what
Qualitative vs Quantitative
Quantitative: Numerical values, no senses used
Qualitative: No numerical values, senses used (can specify which one)
Writing an aim
To determine/investigate…
I.V effect on D.V as seen by…
Writing a hypothesis
- one sentence
- not necessary for a reason why?
- IV and DV, as seen by
How do you answer fixed variable questions?
- what, how much, how, using what
