Bio/other Flashcards
Kochs Postulates
- Same pathogen must be found in every diseased person
- Pathogen must be isolated and grown in a culture
- The same pathogen must be isolated from the experimental animal
Estuaries
Inflow of fresh water into a marine environment
El Niño
Higher than average sea surface temperatures off the pacific coast of South America and extending westward across the subtropical Pacific Ocean.
Braided River
Large suspended load deposits sediments forming temporary lands called braid bars. Erodible banks, wide shallow channels form.
Hypothalamus
Located in the lower brain, signals the pituitary
Pituitary Gland
Located at the base of the hypothalamus
-releases growth hormones and antidiureretic hormone
Thyroid Gland
Located on Trachea
Lowers blood calcium levels and maintains metabolic processes
Gonads
Located in testes and ovaries, release androgens
Pancreas
Secretes insulin to lower blood glucose levels and glucagon to raise blood glucose levels
Blastula
Hollow ball of undifferentiated cells
Gastrulization
Tissues desperate into the 3 layers the endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm.
Aceolomates
Have no defined body cavity. Ex- flatworm
Must absorb nutrients from hosts digestive system
Pseudoceolomates
Have a body cavity but is not lined by tissue from the mesoderm. Ex- roundworm (nematoda)
Coelomates
True fluid filled cavity called a ceolom derived from the mesoderm.
Protostomes vs Deuterostomes
Ceolomates.
Protostome- first opening mouth second is anus
Deuterostome- mouth is second anus is first
