Bio G: Inheritance (PAPER 2) Flashcards
Homologous pair
One gene inherited from mother, one from the father
Allele
Different version of a gene
Genotype
an allele pair for each characteristic
Phenotype
The physical expression of an allele pair
Gamete
A sex cell with half the number of chromosomes
Diploid
Two full sets of chromosomes, one from each parent
Haploid
A single set of unpaired chromosomes
Mitosis cell division process (PAPER 1)
DNA in chromosomes copy itself for mitosis.
DNA condenses to become more visible and membrane around the nucleus disappears.
Chromosome and its copies line up in middle of the cell.
Chromosome and its copies get pulled to each end of the cell.
Membranes form around the ends of the cell.
Cell Membrane and Cytoplasm divide
Two identical daughter cells formed.
Comparison of mitosis and meiosis
meiosis produces gametes whereas mitosis is for growth and repair.
meiosis produces 4 unique haploid cells where mitosis produces 2 identical daughter cells.
Meiosis gives variation where mitosis are identical.
