Bio B: Bioenergetics (PAPER 1) Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis takes in light energy so is endothermic and takes place in the chlorophyll of the leaves.
Photosynthesis word equation
Carbon dioxide + water > glucose + oxygen
Factors affecting photosynthesis
Light intensity
Temperature
Carbon dioxide
Chlorophyll
Use of glucose in photosynthesis
Producing starch that can be converted back into glucose
Producing cellulose for plant cell walls created by glucose in photosynthesis
Respiration in the mitochondria - releasing energy
Transpiration
The movement of water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves supported by the xylem tissue
Translocation
The movement of sucrose, amino acids and other food substances from the leaves to the rest of the plant supported by the phloem tissue
Metabolism
Refers to all the chemical reactions taking place in living cells
Metabolism word equation
Glucose + oxygen > Carbon dioxide + water
