Bio-Cell Cycle Study Guide Flashcards
What are the stages of Mitosis (in order)?
PMAT–> Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase (cytokinesis)
What happens in Prophase?
Chromosomes condense and (the little T shaped…) centrosomes move to opposite sides of the cell. Then spindle fibers from centrioles attach to the middle of chromosomes (kinetochores)
What happens in Metaphase?
Individual chromosomes are spread out within the cell. The nucleus dissolves and the cell’s chromosomes condense and move together, aligning in the center of the cell.
What happens in Anaphase?
The sister chromatids separate from each other and are pulled towards opposite ends of the cell by the centrosomes.
What happens in Telophase?
During telophase, chromosomes get to opposite ends of the cell, the spindles go away, and a nucleus starts to reform around the chromosomes.
What happens in Cytokinesis?
During Cytokinesis final separation occurs. The cells cytoplasm splits, forming two daughter cells.
What’s interphase and what happens in it?
Interphase is the section before mitosis where the cell gets ready (but no visible changes are evident). It’s G1, S & G2.
Why do cells divide?
-To replace old/damaged cells
-To help the organism grow
-To prevent single cells from getting too large
