BIO 200B: Final Practical Flashcards
erythrocytes
the most numerous; red blood cells
leukocytes
least numerous; white blood cells; nucleated cells that are formed in the bone marrow
platelets
function in blood clotting/hemostasis
Granulocytes
type of leukocyte; granules in their cytoplasm stain differentially with Wright’s stain; peculiarly lobed nuclei.
Neutrophils
most abundant of white blood cells; nucleus consists of 3 to 6 lobes; pale lilac cytoplasm; functions as an active phagocyte
Eosinophils
make up about 2 to 4% of WBC; Nucleus is figure-8 shape; stain red-orange with acidic dyes; role in counterattacking parasitic worms
Basophils
least abundant leukocyte; U or S shaped nucleus with two or more indentations; deep purple cytoplasm; role is to mediate the inflammatory response.
