Bio 13.6 Seed dispersal Flashcards
1
Q
What is seed dispersal?
A
Speed dispersal is the spreading away of seeds from the parent plant.
2
Q
Why does seed dispersal increase the chance of survival of the seeds?
A
There is a lot of competition for light and water, and most of the older trees block off the light from the soil. This means that the seeds must get as far as they can from the parent plant.
3
Q
What are the different methods of seed dispersal?
A
- Wind (light and have feathery parachutes)
- Water (fruits are buoyant)
- Exploding pods (burst and scatter in all directions)
- Animal (hooked fruits stick to animals; seeds from fruits are eaten and excreted)
4
Q
What is germination?
A
Germination is the process by which the seeds start to grow into a new plant.
5
Q
What are the conditions for germination?
A
Water
Oxygen
Warmth (Right temperature)
