Bio 13.3 Plant growth Flashcards
What is transpiration?
The flow of water through the xylem vessels in a plant.
What is hydroponics?
Growing plants with their roots in water (nutrient solution).
Why are hydroponic systems more useful when compared to natural environments?
Growers can add just the right amount of minerals to the water, but the soil in natural environments, like deserts, may lack some necessary minerals.
What are the 4 mineral elements?
Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, and Magnesium.
What is nitrogen used for, and what are the deficiency signs?
It is used to make proteins and DNA, and leaves turn yellow when lacking nitrogen.
What is potassium used for, and what are the deficiency signs?
It is used during photosynthesis and respiration, and there are poor flower and fruit growth as well as wilted leaves when lacking potassium.
What is magnesium used for, and what are the deficiency signs?
It is used to make chlorophyll, and leaves turn yellow between the veins when lacking magnesium.
What is phosphorus used for, and what are the deficiency signs?
It is used in energy transfer during photosynthesis and respiration.
What is active transport?
Roots take in minerals using active transport; the process by which minerals are moved from a region of lower concentration (soil) to a higher concentration (cell sap) through the use of energy
This energy comes from respiration in root cells; oxygen in soil spaces is used.
What is aeroponics?
Growing plants with their roots in the air. The roots are misted with mineral solution water every few minutes.. The oxygen is absorbed by the moist roots.
What are the advantages of aeroponics?
- Plants grow faster
- Plants use less water
